bullet7/19/10 Informational Meeting about the Tittabawassee River, Saginaw River & Bay Site: 7 p.m., Monday, July 19, at Saginaw Valley State University

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 wants to update you and answer your questions about the Tittabawassee River, Saginaw River & Bay site. Following brief presentations, there will be time for you to ask questions and talk one-on-one with Agency staff. Since the Superfund agreement was signed in January 2010, EPA and Michigan DNRE have been overseeing Dow's work in three major areas: 1) assessing properties along the rivers to see if early exposure controls are needed; 2) looking at areas in and along the rivers where contaminants might be eroding to develop stabilization plans; and 3) developing comprehensive cleanup options for the first river segment.

The public meeting will be at 7 p.m., Curtiss Hall Banquet Rooms B & C.

Dr. deFur is coming to Mid-Michigan to share in a discussion on the region’s dioxin contamination, our rivers, Saginaw Bay, human health impacts and the draft Consent Order between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Dow Chemical Company to address the contamination.

This is your chance to ask an expert about your dioxin-cleanup related questions, everything from public health effects, to wildlife, to impacts on Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron. Join us for an interesting evening of important information and discussion, about one of the biggest regional and statewide public health and environmental issues of our time. Dr. deFur is an environmental scientist with expertise and experience in the fields of ecological and human health risk assessment, toxicology, dioxin and PCB toxicity, contaminated site clean-up and related issues. bullet11/5/09 EPA public meeting to discuss Dow settlement

EPA and MDEQ will not sign the proposed Dow settlement agreement until after the agencies have engaged the community and fully considered public comment. The proposed agreement -- contained in a legal document called an administrative order on consent -- could be revised based on comments received. A public meeting will be held Nov. 5, 7 p.m., at Saginaw Valley State University, Curtiss Hall, Banquet Rooms A&B, 7400 Bay Road, Saginaw. EPA will hold a question-and-answer session and accept public comments at the meeting.

bulletJune 17, 2009 6:30 PM EPA informational meeting on Dow Dioxin Cleanup

The meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. June 17, will be held in Curtiss Hall at Saginaw Valley State University.
The EPA states they plans to take a leadership role in seeing that Dow conducts a comprehensive cleanup of harmful pollutants discharged in past years to the Saginaw Bay watershed.The purpose of the meeting is to update residents and answer questions about new developments in the cleanup of the Tittabawassee and Saginaw rivers and Saginaw Bay.  At the meeting, the EPA also will present details of its plan, including milestones and schedules for achieving "a comprehensive and expeditious cleanup,"

Admission Free.  The Long Shadow details the dioxin controversy in 2002, from public notification by agency whistleblowers in January to the failed bailout in December. The story highlights the plight of three floodplain families concerned about their health, their property values, and the corporate and government forces that acted against them. The story is told through contemporary videography, historical photos, and interviews with floodplain residents, environmental advocates, key government officials, and state lawmakers.

Dr. Linda S. Birnbaum, the scheduled speaker at the event, is unfortunately in the hospital and will be unable to travel to Michigan in time for the meeting. Dr. Birnbaum, Director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Experimental Toxicology Division in the National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory, was to have provided information relating to dioxins and their health effects.
