Science Advisers Approve Dioxin Report But Require Additional Review

EPA's Science Advisory Board (SAB) has approved its panel's report reviewing the agency's controversial assessment of the risks presented by the ubiquitous contaminant dioxin, but is requiring a higher level of review before the finalized report is transmitted to the agency, after lead reviewers raised some questions about the panel's report.

The decision is a setback for industry, which had urged SAB to return the report to the panel to strengthen its criticisms of the EPA assessment. Instead, the panel approved the report that is generally supportive of EPA's assessment -- though it calls for a host of changes and urges EPA to strengthen some of its analysis.  ......
