Limiting exposure

Editor, The News:

By the tone of the Thursday, Aug. 17, editorial ("Study moderates the dioxin alarm"), it would appear that The Saginaw News expects the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to re-evaluate the cleanup of the Tittabawassee River based on the Dow-funded University of Michigan study results.

These results are preliminary findings, and the editorial comment is premature, perhaps based more on wishful thinking than the sound science called for in the past?

I am raising children on this contaminated river and the U-M study confirmed my worst fears: People are taking up dioxin.

As the study said, if you're older, you have more dioxin.

I must assume my kids are taking up dioxin, and I will take steps to protect them to minimize their exposures as they grow older.

In the meantime, I want my yard and river cleaned up and made safe.

The preliminary findings of the U-M study did nothing to make me feel better about raising my kids along the Tittabawassee River. I am disappointed in The Saginaw News.
